Suzy & Bruce Zarett
Suzy & Bruce Zarett - Hakarat Hatov Award
When Bruce and Suzy got married in 1989, Suzy and sons Dovey and Ami Neuman were already entrenched in the West Hempstead community as members of the Young Israel for 14 years. Suzy had taken on roles as vice-president of programming for YI Sisterhood and treasurer for American Mizrachi Women, which later became AMIT.
During the Covid outbreak in 2020, Bruce continued to be a regular attendee at morning minyan, and along with Yaakov Farkash became Co-Gabbai, walking around with the pushke, which he continues to do each morning. Bruce is a regular Attendee of the 8am Shabbos Minyan. On Sunday mornings he sends out davening times for the week on two of the Anshei Shalom WhatsApp chats - Anshei Weekday Minyanim and Anshei Maariv.
Suzy’s parents and siblings were always frequent visitors to Anshei, coming often for Yomim Tovim, especially for Simchat Torah, and helping to make Anshei very leibedik. Suzy’s parents moved in with them after her father’s heart surgery in 1997, the day before Yom Kippur. Bruce and his father-in-law, Mr. Moshe Greenfield, who was already well known at Anshei, walked into shul erev Yom Kippur and Jack Weinblatt, a’h, immediately got up from his seat next to Rabbi Pearl to offer it to Mr. Greenfield. From then and for the next few years, he stood with Jack by the Aron Kodesh for the end of Yom Kippur. Rabbi Pearl always showed Mr. Greenfield the utmost respect as a Holocaust Survivor, and as a person. The Greenfield-Schrier Holocaust Memorial Walk at Anshei Shalom is partly named for him.
Bruce had a long career as a kosher caterer, with a retail take out store and in-house catering facilities at two different shuls for over 20 years. In 1996 he transitioned to a career in long term health care, becoming a certified dietary manager, and since 2004 has practiced as a licensed nursing home administrator. He has been an active member of the New York chapter of the American Chapter of Health Care Administrators, holding various chapter officer roles, and serving as committee members and chairman of many committees.
Suzy began her career after her sons entered school at HANC, working in a nursing home in the therapeutic recreation department in Forest Hills. She spent ten years as director of therapeutic recreation there, eventually becoming director of therapeutic recreation at Meadowbrook Care Center in Freeport, where she retired in 2022 after 26 years.
Besides their sons and daughters in law, Dovey & Racheli and Ami & Lisa, Suzy and Bruce have 11 grandchildren.
Bruce and Suzy would like to acknowledge Rabbi Soniker and Rabbi Pearl for all their guidance, and the members of Congregation Anshei Shalom and the board for choosing us for this honor. Congratulations also go to our fellow honorees for all they do for Anshei Shalom.
